July 13-20, 2002
We spent the majority of the trip waiting for great hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna mokarran) to arrive. I spotted the first one on Monday, but it didn't stick around to play with us, and it wasn't until Friday that another one graced us with its presence. At nine feet in length, it was a relatively small (and thin) one, but it made multiple passes over all of us in the water, and also took bait from the back of the boat (where Jim Watt decided to play chicken with it). They're amazing, graceful animals, and their unusually large dorsal fin gives them a distinct silhouette.
