Scribbles from Taiwan II

I went to see "Vanilla Sky" tonight at the local big-ass department store / restaurant / movie theater. What a strange movie. Anyway, after the movie ended I had a momentary shock as I realized that I was, in fact, still in Taiwan. There were lots of non-Taiwanese people there. I guess I would be at American movies all the time, too, if I lived here.

In Pingtung we were looking at a photo album at a relative's house, which had some interesting English sayings scrawled on the front and back: "Love endureth as long as the money lasteth." and... "Love begins by deceiving oneself and ends by deceiving others." So bitter!

Also, some items from a cafe menu that I found entertaining:

EURP CATU DISH, SPAGHETTI WITH SEAFOOD REEF, PATAS, MEST SAUCE LASAGNA, BAKED MIX SEAFOOD AND CHEESE RILL MAXICAINE STYLE, SMOKED COD FISLL RICE, RID WINE BEEF RICE AND VGE OMELETTE SIPAN STYLE, FIRED RICE/STEETH, GEEN PEPPER BEEF FIRED RICE, MASMROOM AND PEAK RICE, KIMCHEE CHAFING DISH, MANDEILNG COFFEE.

My uncle is the water conservation and ... uh, something director for the middle third of Taiwan. He took us around today to see a big dam in the mountains, where the earthquake a few years ago hit really hard. That area (the fault line runs right through there) is amazing. Half of the bridge dropped in height by ten meters, and areas where the road used to be totally flat now have hills right next to them. I have some photos, which I'm sure I'll post eventually. :)
