Osvaldo Golijov - Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears)

Last night, I photographed the dress rehearsal of Osvaldo Golijov's opera, Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears). Two other photographers and I stood in a roped-off section of the Rose Theater in the Time Warner Building and clicked away during the no-intermission opera in three acts. The Lincoln Center production of Ainadamar is directed by Peter Sellars and features sopranos Dawn Upshaw and Jessica Rivera, and mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor -- and it was absolutely beautiful. I was torn during the entire performance: do I focus on what is going on in the viewfinder, or do I sit back, read the supertitles, and let the performance wash over me? I (of course) had to continue to photograph the performance, but there were definitely moments when the music was so overwhelming that I almost lost the ability to think. It's a good thing I'm filled with testosterone, because Dawn's closing aria nearly made me cry, and I was pretty shaken up during the cab ride home.

It was good to see Osvaldo again. I hadn't seen him since Geoff was in town for the Kurtag at Carnegie.

Ainadamar plays January 22, 24, and 26. If you've got time, you should go see it, or better yet, subscribe to a bunch of concerts in Ozzie's festival.

Unfortunately, I can't share images publicly, but those of you who have private access here should stay tuned...
