A Superficial Canon 1Ds, 1D, and D60 Comparison [back to digital photo]

Adam Tow and I met up tonight to take a few shots with our Canon digital SLRs. Specifically, we wanted to show the effect of focal length cropping on the 1D and the D60. As a bonus, the web ends up with another image comparison data point to fuss about. If you do not like the way these comparisons were done, please send Adam or me a link to the results of your own tests.

Please leave a comment, if you would like to.

First, let's look at the image sizes produced by each of the three cameras and see how they compare to each other:

Next is an image that demonstrates focal length cropping of the 1D and D60 compared to a full-frame image. To *really* be accurate, the three superimposed rectangles should be centered on the same point, but for some reason our sample image ended up like this. You get the idea, though. :)

The comparisons:

  1. [see it] Low-light exposures, same tripod location and focal length, 85/1.8, f8 for 1.6-3.2 sec
  2. [see it] Low-light exposures, same tripod location and focal length, 100/2.8 USM macro, f8 for 1.6-3.2 sec
  3. [see it] Low-light exposures, different tripod locations to fill frame, 100/2.8 USM macro, f8 for 1.6-3.2 sec
  4. [see it] Low-light exposures, same tripod location and focal length, 28-70/2.8L @ 50mm, f8 for 2 sec
