Great Hammerheads Sharks (Sphyrna mokarran), Bahamas

No shark moves like a great hammerhead shark. They're one of the most elegant and maneuverable sharks in the ocean, able to turn completely around nearly instantaneously. Their bodies are long and sinewy, and their tall dorsal fin (a defining feature) signals its presence on the surface long before you can see the rest of the animal.

We did have a couple of great hammerhead sharks at one of the dive sites, three tiger sharks and five bull sharks kept them from coming on the bait consistently. Nevertheless, there were a couple of really nice passes down the line of divers hanging behind the boat. For most participants on these winter shark expeditions, a photo of a great hammerhead shark is ultimate goal.
