GALAPAGOS LAND TOUR 2003 - ISABELA

Isabela Island

"This morning, we visit Tagus Cove, located on the western Island of ISABELA. Six volcanoes flowed together and formed the largest Island in Galapagos. On our walk, we discover a salt-water lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields and volcanic formations. Graffiti dating back to the 1800's is written on the rocky cliffs. Explore the Cove in pangas or sea kayaks and find Galapagos penguins and other seabirds." - Itinerary

Before setting foot on land, we took a long panga ride around part of the island to observe Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants, Galapagos fur sea lions, California sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and marine iguanas. Most of the remaining 3,000 Galapagos penguins live on the island of Isabela, but we only saw six or so. After the panga ride, we hiked up the tuff cone to a beautiful view of a salt-water lagoon with the ocean behind it. A flightless cormorant greeted us when we arrived to the landing point, and four penguins assaulted a pelican when it dove into the water and caught a fish.
