"I didn't bring my make-up! I don't know what I'm going to do! This is embarrassing." - Joy

Gabe's driving like a maniac towards our meeting point somewhere near Pier 9.

1020 PST - Post Meeting on Pier 7

Objectives:
1. find cripple and destroy UER detoxin capabilities
2. learn about detoxin and report findings to headquarters
3. Search and destroy all scientific personnel associated with detoxin

Project Whitehorse - destroy scientific personnel
Assistant Director Chase - may have to interrogate - has all research.

There is only one factory. Destroy it.

While the meeting was going on, Gabe got a call from someone telling us to "leave now for Nagiya Travel Services" and to send one person to meet an Agent at Pier 41.

Nagiya Travel Services:
Hayward Travel Center
22308 Foothill Blvd.
Hayward, CA.

Zach is going to Sausalito – he’s on the boat now.

We found a poem with a PO form stapled to it. It was typed on a vintage typewriter:

"There he sits, tranquil yet weeeping,
like Niobe of myth.
Downed by the Royal Air Forse,
Then jailed in an Inglish quod.
He was topgui, a-number-one jock in his
Class; but now he sits,
Like Niobe of myht, awaiting his executoin."

Wrong characters: esiiio
Corrected letters: ecenio

Niobe: city in NY

Main Entry: quod
Pronunciation:
'kwäd
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: circa 1700
slang British : PRISON

Main Entry: Ni·o·be
Pronunciation:

Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, from Greek NiobE
: a daughter of Tantalus and wife of Amphion who while weeping for her slain children is turned into a stone from which her tears continue to flow

Zach got a CD in Sausalito

1110 PST

Listening to track 18 – from CD
We found a slide with pictograms and stuff on it. They decoded to phonetic french:

"Ay choo tai
Aw
Dees wheat" – in French (listen to track 18)

1117 PST

On the way to Sausalito – Zach will be waiting on Ridgeway.

Julian Chase escaped – we were told this on the Pier.

"this is G-COM. Blah blah blah blah! Blah blah blah blah! Not Time! Julian is esscaping! Julian is escaping!" – Gabe

6 of Spades: (someone else’s card?)

"It’s Clark from the left, he shoots…
Score! The keeper was half-dozin’ off
There, aid it cost his team big time!
Number 32 is being carried off the field!"

CD contents (track 30):

Julian Chase escaped from Mansfield Federal Pen.
Discorium bio toxin. He wants to go east and sell to Uber.
"Must find Julian Chase – new top priority mission.
Bus stop @ Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Entrance.
North, along the bay.
Go to track 16."

Mansfield is San Quentin.

Duran Duran View to Kill – Track 16 on the CD
Roger Moore, Grace Jones

En route to San Quentin…

Recap: at Palace of Fine Arts, we have to tell Dave our name in French (posing as a French tourist). Gabe pulls through with obscure literary experience and got us our clues – a slide and a packet. The slide was decoded above to phonetic french "listen to track 18." We got a poem (above as well).

Found some pictures of prominent (and not so prominent) landmarks. They pictures have been distorted. On the back of the pictures are directions.

En route to Woodminster Amphitheater, down Skyline Blvd.

We’re not sure about this hint, because there’s so much extra information. Kim and Josh are trying to solve matrix problems from the metal plate.

1420 PST

Still en route to Woodminster Amphitheater.

1429 PST

Plan aborted – wrong location!

Henry plotted the (X,Y) coordinates and they intersected at (42,51)

Back up to Richmond towards Giant and Atlas.

1602 PST

Call from Dr. Julian Chase

"I just wanted to see what I’m up against."
"I believe you are expendable."

We failed to interrogate him (got off the phone too quickly).
We asked him where he is: "in a secured bunker."
(415) 225-5238 (Caller ID)

1637 PST

We’ve been wandering around for an hour and a half, and everyone is sneezing from hay fever.

A bunch of people lifted the metal manhole and found the clue underneath. It is a piece of paper that can be inverted (partially split diagonally, horizontally,a nd vertically in the middle) with incomplete words (like hangman lines – one for each character). I don’t believe any one else had gotten the clue, since it took a bunch of people to lift the grate.

G-CON called and told us to go to the area around Vitalach Island.

1649 PST

Zach just got the clue into a good state. He kicks ass.

When one side is the completed seal, the other side reads:

G_ _A_G_S_L_M_! I’_A_A_A_N_HO_!

LETOHARAGAINANIN – let ohara gain an in in a niagara hotel
RISETAKELAMEF – rise, take lame female, kate, sir.
NEVEROD – never odd or even.
IROAMEDUNDERITAS – I roamed under it as a tired nude maori.

Lake Herman Road!!!!

1802 PST

En route to Lake Herman Road.

"Don’t let the van go less than 55!"
"Hit the police man!" – Joy
"Which way?" "Left, right, something!" – Josh
"I know this van!" – Gabe

We’re next to some rolling hills to our right, yellowed by lack of rain, driving N on Columbus Pkwy near Vallejo. We have a habit of missing turns…

The Speed soundtrack is still playing – it sort of puts you in a stressed, excited mood, especially while missing turns and almost hitting bikers on the road in a huge van.

1908 PST

Calling G-CON

Is the clue near the satellite dishes on Lake Herman Road? YES
Yes: 3. Is the clue a physical object we can take with us? NO

1937 PST

After being told that we had to use something that we were told to bring, Joy immediately remembered that she saw "a strange looking jack on a big block of cement." So… we stuck the headphones into the jack, and were told that we should go to the Lake.

1956 PST

Found tape at the lake – it’s all wet.
There’s like… a bunch of guns and explosions going off.

(415) 383-9718 (scream) – this is the answer!

The scream counted as one sound, and the high and low ricochets counted as the same (9). The short machine gun blast counted as 5, instead of 1 (thanks to Munira and company, whom we called for advice). Answering machine message is further below.

2030 PST

We’re stuck in the parking lot listening to a bunch of explosions and guns.
We may call G-CON.

At IHOP now.

Calling G-CON:

  1. Are all distinct sound types on the tape used to decipher this code? YES
No: Are non-gun shot sounds relevant?
  2. Do all distinct sound types need to be deciphered individually? YES
  3. Is our answer a track we need to play on the CD? NO

Recounting (see above for solution) gave us:

Uber Headquarters. You must stop him from reaching them to tell Colonel V…
He will be giving Anti-toxin notes.
They will try to delay the uber agents."

2215 PST

Julian Chase just called.

He said he was killing all his enemies, but wouldn’t tell us where he was or who his enemies were, or why they were attacking him. He asked us to prove why he should trust us. We couldn’t answer, so he said he proposed a series of tests. If we don’t pass these test we will be eliminated. We will run across information about the tests very soon.

Gabe is driving like a madman.
"This thing turns like a bitch, dude!" – Gabe

2226 PST

We’re going to the old state capitol in Benicia right now. We asked some people dressed like Satan if there was anything of note in Benicia ("how are you guys going to stay awake for 30 hours? Like… Crystal Meth?"). He mentioned that there was the old state capitol, and gave us directions. He also gave us a flyer for his spoken word show coming up.

We found a sheet of music in an electrical shed behind the capitol building! It’s in F major.

2352 PST

En route to the John Muir Historical Sight Park n Ride – we just got off on Alhambra off of 680.

"When I wear my glasses then I get into smart mode." –Joy
"You’re the trinary master." – Zach

"Go to Osorno Rapid Transit Station by UER today."

Another team was nice enough to tell us the clue (pay-back!) because they said the clue had been compromised.

0125 PST SUNDAY *************************

The circuit problem is a bitch. We know that we have to know the resistor codes.

"Thanks, Ben, I mean, Agent Nuts." -Gabe

We got it!

0159 PST

There was supposed to be a bomb on our car, but it was no longer there (melted off, we later found), so we were told to call G-CON (there was a message in a newspaper dispenser).

So, I called Ki and got resistor codes from her. It turns out that there were only a few resistors that matched any of the resistors in the lame-ass diagrams. Each resistor was on exacly two of the 6 circuits. When overlayed on each other, they spelled out "14" or "41" with the strips of paper they were printed on! We think it matches CD track 14, or 41. Since we have already gone to Woodminster Amphitheater, we aren’t wasting any time wondering where it is. Hopefully there will be something there this time. J

We’re on highway 13.

"13 sucks, dude." – Josh

We just hit a series of "speed bumps" on the friggin freeway. Why the hell are there huge bumps on the freeway?

"I’m going to toss my cookies!" –Kim
"It was slow, but smooth, dude." –Gabe
"Oh shit!" – Gabe
"Gabe, there are like, pylons!" –Eric
"How dare you violate my inner sanctum!" –Gabe

0234 PST

On the way out of the car: "Dude, check out that Chihuahua." –Gabe

On the way to Oakland. We found a packet at the top of the Woodminster Amphitheater that has satellite photos of a port on the inner harbor of Lake Mer (we found it on the map). It’s near Jack London Square. Along with the maps were a bunch of budget pie charts talking about the bio toxin, which we think are semaphore codes for an alphabet. Also, a note:

"Agents –

Our tracking satellites are back online. You should be able to pinpoint Chase. He’s making mistakes and running out of room. You almost have him. Remember your mission and whatever you do, do not let U.B.E.R. get to him first."

0239 PST

We’re decoding the semaphore right now:
"Lawrence Hall Of Science, Sebes" Sebes = Berkeley on our map.

On our way!

0244 PST

"That thing had Taco Bell written all over it!" (the Chihuahua) – Gabe
"University Avenue sucks a fat dick." – Gabe (en route to Berkeley)
"Dude, we’re on fire right now." – Henry

0305 PST

Lawrence Hall of Science

Found an internal memorandum from President Carteson to Jordan Luft, Secretary of State. All envelopes had been opened previously.

Chase is GOOD! (?)

"WK53s are retouched UER Jarshinko’s.
We need to conduct "imaginative procurement" to get biochemical supplies."

Underlined words in document:

This freight train crossing in front of Jack London square is friggin’ LONG…

"For fuck’s sake! Dude, this train is almost as fuckin’ long as my penis. I can’t stand it." – Gabe
"I’m like waiting for Godot here. What the FUCK?" – Gabe

0358 PST

Found a letter by the statue:

"Chase has been sighted and he is very close. Maybe just twenty minutes away.

To prevent U.B.E.R. reaching him first, we encoded where he was last seen in the following:

We’re trying to match the underlined words in the previous (Berkeley) document with the missing words in this document, but nothing seems to make sense.

0445 PST

Morse code by blanks in name:

..- . .-. ... . -.-. -.-. -.- .--. -

Gabe stripped the morse code out of above, which says,

"UER SEC CKPT" or something, which is on the map as "UER Security Checkpoint"

We’re en route to the checkpoint now (it’s on the map). It took us longer than anticipated to figure out the clue.

The berkeley envelope had part of a code on the bottom:

"5 or 7"

The Jack London Square envelop had another part:

"6 or 8"

0500 PST

We stopped at the toll plaza, and were confronted by 4 angry policemen with spotlights, who rushed at us as soon as we got out of our car. They said a bunch of kids had been running around the tools (because booths 5,6,7,8 were all closed). Called G-COM and notified them of the situation. The told us "Track 27 or 34" depending on whether we were going to go to 5 or 7, or 6 or 8.

Our gas cap is hanging and flopping around. It’s making banging noises against the side of the car.

Track 27:

"Congratulations! You have forget Julian to flee.

We have set up a blockade at the end of the bridge. He will have to choice but to stop on Bright island. Lot w/view of New Jackson (San Francisco)."

We’re going to treasure island now.

Gas cap is back on the car now thanks to Zach.

Track 34 is wrong. Called G-CON, and found out that they told us the wrong number. It should have been 35. We followed both plot lines (good and bad Julian Chase) and they seem to converge here. I guess we didn’t have to do both Berkeley and Woodminster…

Track 35: (other track – 6 or 8)

Julian Chase. Both governments after him. Col. Vashinko betrayed him. He’s like, doing research on Bright Island, or something. It’s cold outside. I don’t want to go. Also, Gabe’s friggin ford taurus key works in this van. He started the car, and I was confused because I had the van keys around my neck.

0606 PST

Found nasty-ass tomato in some bucket taped to the trashcan. It had a letter and some cloth by it telling us to check our email account. Julian has hacked into our account and changed the password, so we have to solve our puzzle to get into email.

The letter says that we are too late. Uber used the toxin on Julian, supposedly. We don’t have the toxin or antidote. Uber has picked up on our actions. Without the research, we can’t make the antidote. "You failed your mission. Clean up the mess." They will email us with the location of the safe house.

All colors in flag list in different languages (web search):

Red, yellow, blue, white, black
Rouge, jaune, bleu, blanc, noir.
Rot, gelb, blau, weiß, Schwarzes
Rosso, giallo, blu, bianco, nero.
Vermelho, amarelo, azul, branco, preto.
Rojo, amarillo, azul, blanco, negro.

Got a piece of cloth with letters on it. Decoded puzzle + matched letters on flag to "draw out" maps! "lastdefense"

Remember what I told you about the conspiracy? It's all true and more.
I've got enough of the info on the antitoxin to make a try at making

Because I wouldn't tell them where I put the information Stapfler gave

toxin and then let me escape. They sent you after me knowing that I
would have to go after it hoping that you would catch me. If you were
successful, I'm sure Carteson would have killed you afterwards.
I had to make a try at the antidote not just to save my own ass, but
Carteson and Khrushnevski are planning a full-scale test of it tomorrow
in one of their planned 'skirmishes'. I can't let them do that. I
suspect the conspiracy goes back as far as 1982. I once thought
President Carteson was a great man, a man of honor. It seems we all
have our lusts.

As you now know, Elsa Stapfler passed conspiracy and more importantly
anti-toxin information to me before she was killed by the DCIS. You
must get this information. I have placed what I started in a secret
location. I cannot disclose that location here as this communication
is not secure---you must find it.
My notes about the location of the WFS factory are in the same secret
location. They knew I was onto them this time, that's why they framed
me! With the evidence I sent CI3, hopefully it will be enough and the
international community will act quickly to remove these two from
power. But I know they won't be able to do anything until they can be
sure the toxin factories are destroyed.

The toxin is fatal after 16 hours and it's really affecting me
now---I'm not sure if I have all the pieces or if I've pieced the
antidote together correctly, but I'm going to try with what I have now,
because I don't have much more time.
Unfortunately if you do somehow find me and I'm dead, you will be
infected too. I'm sorry. You might even be feeling the first effects
of the toxin now: light-headedness, fatigue, an unshakeable feeling of
grime, difficulty concentrating on simple tasks, and a desire to just
stop and sleep. Some people can fight the effects longer but in the
end it's fatal. Whatever you do DON'T GO TO SLEEP. It speeds up the
course of the toxin. Stay awake. Fight it!

More answers may be at the factories and at Stapfler's private lab.
Maybe CI3 can help as well. You've got to go blow up those factories so
CI3 and then go after that antidote. My time is up-I see their
headlights! But I'll try to buy you some more time. -Chase

CI3 Agents:
As you know the DCIS found Julian Chase's body on Bright Island,
destroyed by the biotoxin. Since you are reading this, you have
touched the infected remains and are infected with the biotoxin.

You must come in for a debriefing and you have less than 16 hours to
live. As for Chase, at last the traitor is dead. We have evidence that
shows he was indeed selling information to the UER dogs. This could mean the
end of the WFS---WE MUST HAVE YOUR INFORMATION ABOUT ELSA STAPFLER AND
THE ANTITOXIN.

You have failed your mission and you must be quarantined. We will do
our best to make you comfortable in your last hours. Report back to
DCIS headquarters immediately in Tucker.

Immediate Mission Change.
FROM CI3--

Agents:
We have been given evidence that Krushnevski and Carteson have been

co-conspirators in a cold war charade designed to keep them both in
power. To accomplish this, they have both been sharing military
secrets for years and instigating skirmishes to terrify the people.
Despite what WFS/DCIS told you, Chase has given us evidence that both
countries do have the toxin and do have factories where it is being
produced.

It is true that Stapfler was employed by the WFS govt. working on the
antidote, but the WFS was by no means defenseless as they previously
claimed. Rather the antidote was the ace in the hole for Carstensen
just in case things got ugly. Stapfler was brilliant and in her
research for the antidote came across evidence
that showed that WFS and UER worked together to develop the toxin. She
pieced the key piece of the antidote together and realized this
conspiracy between the leaders of the countries. She contacted Chase
and Chase was about to go public when the WFS/DCIS framed him for
Stapfler's death, taking him into custody and quashing his credibility.

There are signs that Carteson plans to betray his secret alliance with
the UER by using this biotoxin against them. The international
community and the CI3 in good conscience cannot stand for something so
virulent and deadly to be used in open warfare, nor can we allow the
leaders of these countries to continue their charade.

Due to the urgency of this situation, we will not be able to insert
fresh agents to take your place, but we have been monitoring your
progress and you have proven yourselves to be truly exceptional agents.
 Your mission is twofold:

First, you must locate both biotoxin factories. Our satellite laser
system will target them for destruction once you have found them.
Avoid the DCIS and U.B.E.R. at all costs.

Second, find the antitoxin. Stapfler had a private research facility
away from her office at BioPotent Laboratory. She must have some notes
there which could help you complete her research.
Find them.

You are no longer working for WFS/DCI, in fact they will probably move
to eliminate you after you destroy the factory. You are truly on your
own now. Trust no one but other CI3 agents. DCIS is still sticking
close to you. Do not meet with them. Slip away. We will provide you
with a means of receiving communications from us.

Whatever you do, avoid coming into direct contact with Chase. He is
infected with the discorium toxin.

Good luck.

We made contact with the agent and made the exchange. Inside the small silver capsule was a note: "Industrial City", with a red stripe through the ‘D’. We’re on our way to South San Francisco to find the ‘D’.

We got a foam core board with triangles cut out of it and are trying to match it with everything else we own. Took a photo of the typewriter, but now we have to go BACK there and hike up that damn hill again to "interact" with the type writer more.

We just typed the Niobe poem on the vintage typewriter and got (the letters had been changed):

"Southern Trail Head, Sawyer Camp Trail" (amongst all the gibberish)

Sawyer Camp Trail (San Carlos/Belmont/San Mateo)

Rating: Easy
Distance: 12 miles (round-trip)
Time: 1-2 hours
USGS 7.5' topo: San Mateo & Montara Mountain, CA

Description

This is a generally flat ride along a paved multi-use trail, except for a small climb @ 4.8 miles (3% average grade) marker to the end of trail @ 6 miles marker. The return is along the same route. Nice trail with lots of benches and portable toilets every couple miles, even drinking water fountain at beginning and end of trail. Because of the heavy use of this very popular trail (pedestrians, runners, skaters and cyclists), especially on the weekends, it is imperative that great caution is exercised at all times.

Directions to the start

(N 37° 31' 52", W 122° 21' 48")
The Sawyer Camp Trail starts at the Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo, at the intersection of Crystal Springs Road and Skyline Boulevard. To get there, take the Highway 92 exit off Interstate Highway 280 and head west toward Half Moon Bay. After about 1/2 mile, turn right on Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35). Stay on Skyline Boulevard about 1.5 miles to the intersection with Crystal Springs Road, on the right. The entrance to Sawyer Camp Trail is at this intersection.

1100 PST – Southern Trail of Sawyer Camp Trail

Found Cube w/VII on it

Track 7:

Excellent work, Agents! WFS biotoxin factory under in Crystal Springs Reservoir. We have target it for destruction. We have competed 1st 1/3 of mission. Elsa Stapfler met with Yuri Vorkuda, an Uber agent. Heay drinker. Meant to meet Elsa to compare notes. He communicated with strange devices, like small cubes. He let a trail. Vorkuda was killed by the Uber.

The cube is acrylic, and has an opaque top and bottom, both of which are mirrored on the inside.

1220 PST

Broke the top of the cube off:

"ASAP Mt. Eden Mansion, behind the barn, Nagyatad."

"Elsa – you are in danger. I can help. Meet me. Yuri."

We’re on our way to Hayward now. I believe we’ve lost our position near the head of the pack. When we got the acrylic cubes, there were about 14 still unclaimed. However, it took us an hour and 20 minutes to work up enough courage to damage our clue.

There are a couple of teams on the road with us right now.

1243 PST

Paid May 19, 1999 Office of the President

We found a bunch of numbered, colored test tubes behind the "barn" along with a receipt with mixed drink names on it, and "$310".

Questions:

Do we need to know the ingredients of each drink? yes
Does each mixed drink evaluate to one letter? yes
Is $310 a sum of numbers used to evaluate the clue? no

"College Ohlone" – one letter for each mixed drink deciphered by addition and mod26 mapped to the alphabet.

1506 PST

Driving to Ohlone College. G-CON just told us that we had to cross the bridge to get to Ohlone, but that’s not the case. It’s in fremont, and we’re already on the east bay. I’m not sure what’s going on, but we’re going anyway. With two bartenders, we couldn’t identify the cheap-ass alcohol in the tubes above. We also didn’t get some of the drinks right – Josh and Kim agreed on the contents of the drinks, but apparently, they disagreed with G-CON’s idea of what they were. Anyway, so we’re off. Now we’re listening to the Mortal Kombat sound track, even though moral is at an all-time low because of the last annoying clue.

Joy’s dozing off to my left. She seems to almost have given up her habit of holding an uncapped pen near my shirt. We’re turning left on Mission now.

1533 PST

Found other factory + locked on to destroy it.

"Go to Genencor to find Elsa’s research." We need the anti-toxin for us, since we have been infected by Julian’s body.

The last clue was siliconed in a metal pipe. One team had pipe cutters, but we just stuck pliers into the thing and pulled out the silicone plug. A rolled sheet of electronic imaging paper came out, which we recognize as a stereogram that said, "CTD 13". Track 13 on the CD player confirmed destruction of the 2nd biotoxin factory, and directed us to get to Genencor ASAP.

Our plans have changed (G-CON told us to call them after we found the clue) – we’re now going to the old Caliper on California St.

1607 PST

We just took a scenic tour through Fremont because we ended up on the 680. *sigh*

"God damn! Slow ass bitch!" – Gabe’s getting pissed at an old couple in a convertible.

1710 PST

There’s another friggin’ clue here (@ Caliper, on California Street). It’s a fake periodic table with a bunch of triangles and rectangles – we clearly have to use our foam-core board here. We know that they match the bridges in the bay area (using the first letter of each bridge name). If we match them in the order we traversed them, we get:

1175JONSON29

1175 Johnson #29, Menlo Park?

Called G-COM. They mispelled it on purpose. We’re on our way to 1175 Johnson.

Track #29 is the end-game track.

1845 PST

After the post-game "ceremonies." Everybody was surprised that we did so well without calling for hints. I (Eric) was glad to meet everyone involved in the planning work. I had a fabulous time hanging with these guys – it was my first time meeting everyone except Gabe! And now, we return to the Ramsell residence.

Closing notes:

"according to Dave and Ben, if we were an hour earlier (as we would've been if we didn't take taht fucked up road at the end), we would've come in fifth or something, and we had the least amount of calls by a margin of five calls"

Thanks to Gabe for driving the entire time.  I don't know how he did it.
