RAJAH AMPAT 2004 - CONSERVATION
[previous: cephalopods] [next: crustaceans]

Photos: Conservation

While some of the villages we visited protected their local reefs in exchange for things like proper water wells and schools, most did not. We found an abandoned gill net deep on one dive, and ended up spending much of the dive cutting it loose and floating it to the surface. The gill net had remnants of a sea turtle in it (a flipper), who might have torn off its own limb in its efforts to get away.

We also frequently came across rubble patches that were the result of bomb fishing.

We find a gill net at 110 feet, just off of the point (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

Hausi works to detangle the gill net from the reef (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

Tomi inflates a float to raise the gill net off of the reef (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

A severed turtle's flipper is caught in the gill net (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

Tomi guides the net upwards -- the turtle's flipper is still visible (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

Hausi and Tomi float the gill net to the surface (Jamur Utara, Wajag)

The patch of rubble here in an otherwise healthy reef was most likely caused by bomb fishing (Kri Island)
Looks like anchor damage to me.

A diver's hand print, left on a hard coral -- the polyps came back out, eventually (Mike's Point)

Even at the most healthy reef I've ever seen, I found a rice bag tangled up in a coral (Mike's Point)
