RAJAH AMPAT 2004 - MISCELLANEOUS FISH
[previous: crustaceans] [next: nudibranches & worms]

Photos: Miscellaneous Fish

I found it difficult to put these animals into their own categories because there were too few of each to warrant dedicated pages.

Most species IDs and some image captions are courtesy of Judy Foester.

SELECTED IMAGES

I'm told that this is a rabbitfish of some sort, perhaps (Siganus magnificus). But the species magnificus does not have brown spots under the eye or a brown ring iris. Another candidate for the wetpixel critter ID.(Slam Malam, Jef Pele)

A juvenile starry dragonet (Synchiropus stellatus) next to (Nephtheid sp.) soft corals. (Gunun Laut, Jilliet)

A juvenile filefish (tiny) hides in coral and crinoid arms (Lamprometra palmata) (Ikan Muda, Gamfi Street)
Possibly a Diamond Leatherjacket (Pervagor sp.)

A juvenile starry dragonet (Synchiropus stellatus) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A small scrawled filefish (Aluterus scriptus) hides by a gorgonian (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Leafy filefish with skin flaps (Chaetodermis penicilligera). He is securely holding on to the hydroid stalk with his mouth. (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)
Possibly a Diamond Leatherjacket (Pervagor sp.)

An upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopeia andromeda). These are commensal with photosynthetic algae, so they just flip over and swim into the ocean floor, exposing the algae to the sun (Sel Pelee Bay - Exploration)

A huge Helmut gurnard (Dactyloptena orientalis). The ID book I have says that these critters get up to around 15 inches in length, but I swear this one was bigger. I shot with a 100mm lens and had to swim *very far away* to get this shot. (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A huge Helmut gurnard (Dactyloptena orientalis) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A huge Helmut gurnard (Dactyloptena orientalis) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Unknown fish hanging out under a coral (Tempat Lego, Wajag)

Longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) in a gorgonian sea fan (Jamur Tengah, Wajag)

Juvenile barramundi (Cromileptus altivelis) are beautiful and swim with a neat, undulating motion (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)
I really love these!

A pair of freckled goatfish (Upeneus tragula) -- in red phase (they are color changers) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A bait ball of anchovies (Engraulis australis) scatters as it is being fed upon by roving jacks (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) (Sardine's Reef)

Bluefin trevallies/jacks (Caranx melampygus) hunt with giant trevallies (Caranx ignobilis) (Sardine's Reef)

Schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) (Cape Kri)

A drifting school of Bigeye snapper (Lutjanus lutjanus) (Mios Kon)

A longfin spadefish/batfish (Platax teira) hovers as it is cleaned by two bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) (Mios Kon)
