Photos: Nudibranches & Worms

Although nudibranches and flatworms are probably the most beautiful animals in the sea (bright colors mixed with bizarre forms), they are difficult to shoot in an interesting way. Here are just a few of the dozens of species of nudibranches during our weeks in Irian Jaya.

Particularly interesting for me were solar-powered nudibranches (Phyllodesmium longicirra), a nudibranch previously only seen in the Philippines (I don't know the scientific name off-hand, but it was IDed in a thread in the Wetpixel critter ID forum), and two Maiazoon orsaki flatworms mating/fighting.

Most species IDs and some image captions are courtesy of Judy Foester.

SELECTED IMAGES

Pteraeolidia ianthina nudibranch. Also farms photosynthetic zooxanthellae by eating hydroids. It's thought that they don't need to eat once they farm enough zooxanthellae, which multiplies in the nudi's tissues. (Goabesar, Farondi)

Perhaps a Godiva quadricolor nudibranch (Goabesar, Farondi)

Chromodoris elizabethina nudibranch (Goabesar, Farondi)
This was identified as C. annae but I disagree.

Parasitic flatworms (Waminoa sp.) cover a soft coral (Tempat Buaia, Ef Mo)
I think this is species 3.

A very rare nudibranch: Miamira sinuata, or the "jolly green giant" (Tempat Buaia, Ef Mo)

Chromodoris kuniei nudibranch. Was raising mantle margin as it moved. (Tanjung Barat Utara, Jef Pele)

Phyllidia coelestis nudibranch (Slam Malam, Jef Pele)

Nembrotha cristata -- all green (Gunun Laut, Jilliet)

Well, this is some sort of Red-dotted Nembrotha sp. It's unclear from the descriptions on p176-177 of Debelius' book (Gunun Laut, Jilliet) Check Coleman, p.44, definite match.

Solar-powered nudibranch (Phyllodesmium longicirra). It eats zooxanthellae found in soft corals (like leather corals), which then use photosynthesis to produce nutrients for the slug. (Gunun Laut, Jilliet)

A flatworm (Pseudoceros lindae) (Gunun Laut, Jilliet)

A flatworm (Pseudoceros laingensis) mimicks the nudibranch, (Chromodoris aureopurpurea). (Gunun Laut, Jilliet
I think this one looks a lot like the one that spun the threads to capture plankton, from the undersides of the mushroom leather coral.

This may be a color morph of the rare Miamira group within the species (Ceratosoma sinuata) a nudibranch. (Ikan Muda, Gamfi Street)

The Sea Slug Forum says the carnivore that hunts and eats Tambja nudis is (Roboastra luteolineata).
See photos by Scott Johnson and the Armstrongs re Roboastra luteolineata feeding.

Elysia ornata sea slug (Tempat Mandarin, Wafak)

Two flatworms (Maiazoon orsaki) battle it out -- they're either fighting or mating. In the case of flatworms, mating becomes fighting. It takes more energy to make eggs, so the flatworm tries to impregnate the other without being impregnated itself. This results in penis-fencing . The organism in question seems to have two penises, which is possible in some species of flatworms.(Tempat Mandarin, Wafak)

An extremely small nudibranch (Tempat Mandarin, Wafak)
Sorry. I suspect those good eyes of yours are better than all others.

Red-gilled Nembrotha (Nembrotha rutilans) pair mating. Nudibranches have their sex organs on their right side and are hermaphrodites. (New Reef)

Chromodoris coi nudibranch, with strange orange things poking up near its gills. Raises and lowers mantle margin when it moves. (Cape Kri)
I'll bet those things are parasites but I can't make out any details as you would if they were arthropods.

Bright, yellow and black (Eurylepta sp.) flatworm mimicks the nudibranch, (Phyllidia polkadotsa). (Cape Kri)
