RAJAH AMPAT 2004 - SCORPIONFISH AND RELATED
[previous: reefscapes] [next: sea stars

Photos: Scorpionfish and Related

Photos of scorpionfish, leaf scorpionfish, lionfish, devilfish, etc. Scorpionfish have venomous dorsal spines, and many of them are camouflaged, ambush predators. Their strike is so fast that it is nearly impossible to capture using still cameras.

Most species IDs and some image captions are courtesy of Judy Foester.

SELECTED IMAGES

Spotfin lionfish (Pterois antennata) resting in a sponge (Goabesar, Farondi)
Look at that black band at the base of the pectoral fins. New to me.

Common lionfish, (Pterois volitans) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A spiny devilfish (Inimicus didactylus) partially buried in the sand. They walk along the bottom with pelvic 'fingers'. (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Green color variation of Leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) (Tempat Lego, Wajag)

Tasseled scorpionfish ((Scorpaenopsis oxycephala) (Jamur Tengah, Wajag)

Tasseled scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis oxycephala). This one has very few tassels around the mouth and could be the similar Papuan scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis papuensis). (Berbatus Cadas, Kawe)

Two common lionfish (Pterois volitans). (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Common lionfish acting like he wants himself to be cleaned (Pterois volitans) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

A painted stingfish (Minous pictus). It really is a jungle out there. That could be a leaf scorpionfish or a cockatoo waspfish in the foreground. (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)
There is another similar one with a whiter face called (Richarsonichthys leucogaster), the whiteface waspfish.

White color variation for the Leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus). (Cape Kri)
