RAJAH AMPAT 2004 - SUPER MACRO

Photos: Super Macro

Super macro is most commonly defined as photography with a reproduction ratio greater than 1:1 (35mm equivalent). Here are some of the tiny critters we found during our trip to Rajah Ampat. Some of them, like the isopod Santia sp., cover themselves with something that is toxic to would-be predators. Most divers see these are bright orange dots on sponges and other underwater marine life.

Most species IDs and some image captions are courtesy of Judy Foester.

SELECTED IMAGES

Tiny isopod arthropods (Santia sp.) with up-turned rostrum, similar to the larger ones on the mollusc photo, on a gorgonian sea fan (Acabaria sp.). And this is why we need underwater microscopes. (Fiabajet Exploration)

OK, now remember your biology--what arthropod has seven pairs of legs? The Isopods. This one is (Santia sp.) (Pulau Tengah, Jef Pele)

Some kind of snail approaching from the left to some skeleton shrimp with red eyes (Caprella sp.) (Slam Malam, Jef Pele)

The 'walking sticks' of the sea. This is a skeleton shrimp (Caprella sp.) (Slam Malam, Jef Pele)

Tiny bobtail squid (Sepiola sp.) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Polychaete worms, Polydorella prolifera, a spionid worm. It lives in a neatly constructed particulate tube. Individuals distribute themselves evenly over the surface of their substratum, in this case, an orange sponge, at a distance equalling the length of their tentacles. (Tempat Lego, Wajag)

An orange sponge (Axinellid sp.) covered in Polydorella prolifera or spionid polychaete worms. See last photo.. (Tempat Lego, Wajag)

This polychaete worm, Polydorella prolifera, carefully constructs a sand-grain dwelling tube, and then distributes itself with its fellows, evenly over the surface, usually of a sponge. (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)

Polychaete worms, Polydorella prolifera, competing for access to plankton in the current from their perch on an orange sponge (Axinellid sp.) (Dinding Selatan, Sel Pelee)
