WAKATOBI, DEC 2003 - SCORPIONFISH, STONEFISH ,LIONFISH
[previous: nudibranches, worms, cowries] [next: sea grass]

Scorpionfish, Stonefish, Lionfish

"Scorpions, Stones, and Lions!" (repeat ad nauseum in an annoying, exclamatory voice)

There were many of these poisonous fish around -- scorpionfish and lionfish were everywhere, and during night dives one had to be careful not to run into lionfish, which were frequently hunting by the light of our torches. Also common were leaf scorpionfish, which can look beautiful in the right surroundings. There were three of them clustered together in the 2nd Gully.

Scorpionfish eyes look like rubies. I have yet to see a convincing photograph of one, however (of the eye, I mean).
